Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 NLT

Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to the grave, there will be no work or planning or knowledge or wisdom.

The book of Ecclesiastes is traditionally attributed to Solomon, king of Israel, who ruled from about 970–930 BC. Solomon wrote during a season of unmatched wealth, stability, and achievement. Ecclesiastes reflects the perspective of a man who had seen success, failure, pleasure, and loss. Rather than offering poetic praise or law, the book examines how a man should live in light of life’s limits. It speaks honestly about time, mortality, effort, and meaning.

This verse sits within a section focused on action and responsibility. Solomon does not argue for despair or urgency driven by fear. He speaks to intentional living. Life is finite. Opportunity passes. Work matters because time matters. In the ancient world, daily labor sustained families and communities. Half effort carried real consequences. The verse calls men to engage fully in what is placed before them, not as a pursuit of legacy, but as an act of faithfulness while life allows it.

For you, this verse speaks to excellence and presence. You honor God by showing up fully in your work, your family, and your commitments. You do not drift through responsibility or delay obedience. You do your job with care. You lead your home with consistency. You follow through on what you start. Joy grows when effort matches calling. Purpose forms when you treat ordinary tasks as meaningful. This verse invites you to live awake, disciplined, and engaged today.

Take time today to read Ecclesiastes chapter 9 and let it sharpen how you live.
