Ephesians 3:20 (NIV)

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.

There are moments when life feels boxed in by limits you did not choose and outcomes you cannot see past. Pressure builds when effort has not produced change and prayers feel smaller than the problems in front of you. This verse speaks into those moments with a reminder that God is already at work in ways far beyond your current view.

The author of Ephesians is the apostle Paul, writing during his imprisonment in Rome around AD 60–62. These words come at the close of a prayer directed to believers living in a culture shaped by Roman power, pagan worship, and social hierarchies that often left ordinary people feeling insignificant. Paul ends by drawing attention away from human strength or status and toward the active power of God already present among them. For a community surrounded by forces larger than themselves, this closing declaration reinforced where real authority and change originate.


Paul points directly to God’s ability and initiative. God does not respond merely within the boundaries of human thinking or expectation, nor is His work limited to what people know to ask for. The power Paul describes is not distant or theoretical. It is already at work within believers through God’s presence. The emphasis rests on God’s capacity to act decisively and abundantly, revealing a character that exceeds human calculation while remaining personally engaged with His people.


For you as a man, this challenges the quiet assumptions you form when situations stop improving. You may narrow your prayers to what feels realistic or brace yourself for disappointment because past attempts failed. This verse confronts that mindset by reminding you that God’s power is not waiting to arrive later. It is already at work within you. Obedience here looks like refusing to measure God’s action by your track record or current limitations and choosing to trust His ability even when progress feels stalled.


Consider a man carrying financial strain while trying to keep his family steady. Bills pile up, options feel exhausted, and his prayers become cautious because he no longer expects much movement. This verse does not promise instant relief, but it reorients where he places expectation. Instead of assuming the ceiling has already been reached, he learns to trust that God is active beyond what he can see, sustaining him, shaping decisions, and working outcomes that extend past his narrow field of vision.


To grasp the weight of this declaration, continue through the rest of the chapter and notice how Paul builds toward this closing statement. The surrounding words deepen the understanding of how God’s power operates within the life of the believer and why Paul ends his prayer with such confidence.

Praying for Greater Faith

A prayer asking God to grow faith in His unlimited power and help men believe He can do more than they imagine.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the God who does immeasurably more than anything I could ever ask, dream, or imagine. Forgive me for the times I have shrunk You down in my mind, prayed small prayers, or approached You with weak expectations. Teach me to trust the power of Your Spirit that is already at work within me, shaping me, strengthening me, and leading me even when I do not feel it. Help me to expect more from You, not because I deserve it, but because You are faithful and able.

Give me the courage to believe bigger, to step out in faith when it would be easier to play it safe, and to walk with confidence knowing You can do far beyond what I can see or understand. When doubt whispers that nothing will change, remind me of the ways You have already moved in my life. Let my prayers grow bolder, my faith grow deeper, and my trust grow stronger as I lean on Your power instead of my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
