For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

Corinthians 3:11 ESV

For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

First Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul around 53–55 AD while he was in Ephesus. Paul addressed a church divided by pride, comparison, and misplaced loyalty. Corinth was a competitive, status-driven city where success, philosophy, and public recognition carried weight. Many believers were building their faith on personalities, intellect, or cultural ideas rather than Christ Himself. Paul wrote to correct this and to reestablish what truly holds a life together.

This verse appears in a section where Paul speaks directly about building. He compares Christian life to construction and warns that the quality of what is built depends entirely on the foundation. In the ancient world, foundations determined whether a structure survived storms, time, and use. Paul makes an absolute statement. There is only one foundation that holds. Jesus Christ. Everything else eventually fails under weight and testing. Growth, maturity, and endurance all depend on what a man builds his life upon.

For you, this verse sets direction for the year ahead. You do not build your life on goals, success, or self-discipline alone. You build on Christ first. That foundation shapes how you work, lead, rest, and decide. You measure progress by faithfulness, not comparison. You return to Jesus when pressure rises or plans shift. Confidence grows when your life rests on something unshakable. This verse calls you to start the year grounded, focused, and aligned with Christ at the center.

Take time today to read 1 Corinthians chapter 3 and consider what you are building and what it rests on.

Corinthians 3:11 ESV

One Foundation

For men building their lives firmly on Jesus

Lord, I want my life built on You alone. Help me examine what I rely on and what I trust most. Strip away anything I place ahead of You. Teach me to return daily to the foundation that holds. Guide how I build this year through obedience and trust. Strengthen my faith so my choices stay aligned with You. Let my life reflect stability, humility, and purpose. I place my foundation in Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
