Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

God Establishes Our Steps

This verse reminds us that while men are designed to lead, plan, and forge paths forward, there is a higher hand guiding every step. Proverbs 16:9 speaks directly to men’s struggle between self-reliance and surrender. You may be a planner, a builder, or a man with strong direction—but God’s plans always prevail.

It’s not wrong to make plans. In fact, the ability to set goals is part of how God wired you. But it’s vital to recognize that your success isn’t based on how perfect your plan is—it’s based on how well you surrender that plan to God. When you release control and ask Him to establish your steps, you invite divine course correction.

If you’ve been frustrated, second-guessing yourself, or hitting closed doors, take heart: you’re not off course. You’re being redirected. God doesn’t waste your preparation; He uses it to position you for something better than you imagined. Keep planning—but trust Him more than the plan.

A Prayer for When My Plans Fall Apart

For the man who feels defeated by failed plans and needs to trust God is still leading him to a greater purpose.
