Luke 10:19 ESV

Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.

Like many men, you probably know what it's like to ignore spiritual assault. Every time you move toward obedience, you feel the pull toward old sin, the weight that suddenly falls on you, the shame, the guilt, the small voice in your head telling you that you will never be good enough for God. It's the low-grade resistance with each step towards obedience. The sad part is that we give into it. So even if you don't call it warfare, or choose to ignore it, you still have to deal with this constant battle in your head. In Luke 10:19, Jesus does not speak to you as a victim in this battle. He arms you and shares His power with those who are with Him. He speaks as the King who has already defeated the enemy you're constantly fighting. This verse is about you living your life knowing who you stand with and what ground and authority have already been given to you to defeat the enemy. So don't ignore the battle, enter it knowing you are going to win!

Scripture Explained According to Luke 10, Jesus sent His seventy-two disciples into towns and villages before Him, instructing them to heal the sick and proclaim the arrival of God's kingdom. When they use His name, even demons submit to them, so when they return, they are both shocked and happy. In response, Jesus claims to have witnessed Satan fall like lightning before saying, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy." He is connecting their experience to a more expansive spiritual reality. Their success is an indication that Satan's kingdom is being overrun, and it was not just some party trick.

Rather than being a call to play with actual snakes, the image of "serpents and scorpions" is based on Old Testament language for peril, poison, and spiritual opposition. Jesus makes it apparent that power is bestowed rather than acquired. It flows from Him to the people He sends. The wider New Testament makes it clear that the assurance that "nothing shall hurt you" does not imply that you will never experience pain or persecution. It implies that no spiritual assault or demonic force can ultimately destroy you, drive you away from Him, or halt the progress of His work through your obedience.

Think About This You realize that the actual conflict is sometimes unseen. You just wake up feeling heavy for no apparent reason. As you approach prayer or quiet time with Jesus, a dozen distractions suddenly come back to you. An inner voice begins telling you that confessing a pattern of sin is not a big deal, that you can manage it on your own, and that you will only look foolish of you do. Everything in the house now seems to go wrong when you try to guide your family spiritually. This is spirital warfare!

You also understand what it's like to dismiss all of that as simply "a rough day." You blame yourself for not being stronger, believe that you simply need more self-control, or turn to numbing behaviors, like alcohol, in an attempt to feel better. An active enemy who despises your walk with Jesus and wants you to remain silent, isolated, and discouraged is rarely your explanation as to why you're feeling this way. Luke 10:19 addresses that directly. You're more than just a man attempting to uphold morals. You are a follower of a King who has already smashed the head of the serpent and granted you genuine power over the spiritual force that opposes your obedience in His name. Your battle is won! Face it, do not run!

What Should I Do

Taking spiritual opposition seriously without getting fixated on it is a good place to start. As you move toward obedience, ask God to reveal patterns that cause temptation, confusion, or pressure to increase. Describe those moments as not just sporadic mood swings but as a part of a bigger war. Then react as these seventy-two did: return to Jesus with what you are witnessing in order to remain under His authority rather than to boast.

Then exercise the power that He has truly granted you. In a quiet moment at home or in your truck, declare aloud, "Jesus, You have all authority here," when confronted with ingrained temptation or oppressive thoughts. Scripture that describes who He is and who you are in Him. This should be paired with the statement, "In Your name, I refuse this lie, this pull, this fear." Instead of folding whenever the enemy leans on you, stand where He has placed you. You cannot forget that He has already given you the power to win this fight, so use it!

Additionally, you must maintain clarity regarding the meaning of this promise. Don't pursue spiritual peril to demonstrate your strength; don't interpret pain or persecution as evidence that this verse didn't work. Allow it to ground you in the more profound truth that no force of hell can undermine your position in Christ, rob you of your future with Him, or halt what He accomplishes via your obedience. Lead with that quiet confidence in your church, at work, and at home.

Learn More

In Luke 10:19, Jesus reroutes the disciples' joy within a larger dialogue. He advises them to celebrate that their names are inscribed in heaven rather than the fact that spirits submit to them. When you read Luke 10:17–24 together, you will see both of these truths: you are sent with actual authority against the enemy, and your greatest security and joy come from being a part of Him forever rather than from how strong you feel at any given time.

Standing Firm In A Real War

When you feel the pressure of spiritual opposition and need to remember who you belong to and what authority you’ve been given.

Heavenly Father, I see how frequently I treat the pressure and temptation around me as though they are just in my head. Rather than standing in what Jesus has already completed, I either beat myself up or give up. I realize that I behave less like a disciple who has been given power over the schemes of the enemy in Christ and more like a man struggling to live on my own powers. Teach me to remain under Jesus' authority, to fight every lie and pull in Jesus' name, and to face each day knowing that I am sent and protected by Him. Help me remember that nothing the enemy throws at me can ever hurt me. You have already defeated him. Amen, in the name of Jesus.
