My Help Comes from the Lord: Aaron’s Journey from Self-Reliance to Trust in God’s Strength

Aaron had always taken pride in being self-sufficient. He worked long hours, fixed what was broken, and solved his own problems. He believed a man should stand on his own two feet without asking for help.

Aaron had always taken pride in standing on his own two feet.

But when the small construction company he owned hit financial trouble, his confidence began to crumble. Contracts were delayed, equipment broke down, and bills piled up faster than payments came in. He tried everything, calling in favors, working extra shifts, selling personal items, but it was never enough.

The stress started to seep into his family life. He snapped at his kids over small things. His wife avoided bringing up the finances because every conversation turned into an argument. At night, Aaron lay awake, running numbers in his head until the sun came up.

One morning, after another sleepless night, Aaron decided to take a drive into the mountains near his home to clear his head. He parked on the side of the road, stepped out, and stood staring at the peaks rising above him. The stillness was overwhelming.

The verse from Psalm 121 came to mind. “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” He said it out loud, almost like a challenge, but the words hung in the air like an answer.

For the first time in months, Aaron admitted to himself, “I can’t fix this.” It wasn’t defeat. It was surrender. He prayed right there, asking God not just for a way out, but for the strength to trust Him no matter what the outcome would be.

The weeks that followed didn’t bring instant relief. But there were small signs of God’s help, a client paying an overdue invoice in full, a mechanic fixing a truck for free, an unexpected referral bringing in new work. It was enough to keep the business afloat.

More importantly, Aaron began changing on the inside. He started each day reading scripture instead of checking emails. He prayed with his wife before discussing bills. He even shared his struggles with a friend at church, something he never would have done before.

Months later, the business stabilized. But when Aaron looked back, he realized the real help wasn’t just financial. It was the peace and perspective God gave him in the middle of the storm.

It wasn’t defeat. It was surrender.

Now, whenever he sees the mountains, Aaron smiles and remembers the day he finally looked up, and found his help had been there all along.
